
Due to the diversity of gangue’s chemical composition, the complexity of its mineral composition, the uncertainty of its stacking time and the scale of its production, the basic research and high value-added utilization of gangue have brought great technical challenges. To achieve the scale, resource utilization and harmlessness of gangue, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the “quality” of gangue – rich in silicon chloride and aluminum oxide and the “quantity” – bulk. The dual similarity of gangue and building materials in “quality” and “quantity” determines that the resource utilization of gangue building materials is the most effective technical approach to achieve large-scale high value-added utilization of gangue. This chapter starts with the source and classification of gangue, and introduces the hazards of gangue on the basis of analyzing the physical and chemical properties of gangue, especially discussing the current status and existing problems of gangue utilization.
